AAMI Levels of Isolation Gowns: Isolation gowns are classified into different levels by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) based on their fluid resistance and barrier properties. These levels range from Level 1 (minimal protection) to Level 4 (highest protection), with each level offering varying degrees of fluid resistance and protection against contamination.
Disposable Isolation Gowns: These gowns are designed for single-use and are typically made from lightweight materials like polypropylene or similar nonwoven fabrics. They are suitable for a wide range of healthcare tasks and offer varying levels of fluid resistance, depending on their AAMI level.
Reusable Isolation Gowns: Reusable gowns are made from more durable materials that can withstand repeated laundering and sterilization. They are designed to be worn multiple times, making them cost-effective over the long term. Reusable gowns are often used in healthcare settings.

Impervious Gowns: Impervious gowns are made from materials that offer excellent resistance to fluid penetration. They are suitable for use in situations with a high risk of exposure to bodily fluids and contaminants. These gowns are commonly used in surgical and high-risk healthcare settings.

SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond) Gowns: SMS gowns are made from a combination of spunbond and meltblown polypropylene layers. They offer a balance of fluid resistance, breathability, and barrier protection and are commonly used in healthcare.
Nonwoven Gowns: Nonwoven isolation gowns are made from synthetic fibers bonded together without weaving. These gowns are lightweight and cost-effective while providing adequate protection.
